Traffic Conditions in Okinawa
The main means of transportation when sightseeing on the main island of Okinawa are the Yui Rail (monorail), buses, and rental cars.
Yui Rail is only available in major areas of Naha City and parts of Urasoe City.
Since the service is mainly limited to the urban area of Naha, it is difficult to use it for sightseeing purposes. Only a few tourist spots can be reached by the monorail alone, so if you want to use the monorail, you will probably have to combine it with buses or cabs.
Public bus routes extend to all islands of Okinawa, but the number of buses is limited in some areas. In addition, since it is difficult to know the routes and the locations of bus stops, it is advisable to do a thorough research in advance if you intend to use the buses.
Some hotels and tour companies offer shuttle buses, which can easily get you to your destination.
The best way to make the most of your sightseeing in Okinawa would be to use a rental car.
Many rental car companies are located in downtown Naha, and you can take the Yui Rail from the airport to visit a rental car company. Some companies even deliver rental cars to the airport.
