Ou Island ( ou jima )

Ou Island is a small land-locked island in the southernmost part of Okinawa Island. It is famous for Ou Island Tempura.

The island is small enough that you can drive around it in a few minutes, but there are beaches, markets, and places to eat.

One thing that Ou Island is especially famous for is tempura. Tempura in Okinawa differs from that of mainland Japan in that it is thickly battered, seasoned, and eaten as is. Ingredients include fish, squid, arsa, mozuku, etc.

There are many tempura restaurants on the island, and on weekends, many people line up at tempura stores.

Because of its seaside location and scenic views, the island is a popular destination for driving in southern Okinawa.
